Success in Lewes; MD Championships Set

Lewis, Delaware– The organizational match of the Cape Henelopen Club in Sussex County, Delaware was a rousing success on Saturday.  14 adults and several youths came out to take on a select team made up of members of the Diamond States, the Fair Plays, Eurekas, and Eclipse.  Hundreds of fans and curious onlookers were in attendance on a beautiful field just one street off of the water in Lewes to witness the event.  After about 15 minutes of instruction from the veterans the muffins took the field to try their hand at 19th century base ball.  There was mutch promise in the first frame as several Sussex players reached base, but did not score.  The select club showed their prouness though and walked away with an easy victory, though runs were not the most important thing on this day.  The select club showed the muffins that once you pick up a vintage base ball and bat, you’ll never want to play softball.  We think these men are hooked on the game and will be ready for action next season.  If you are interested in joining them, contact us and we’ll get you their information!  Many thanks to the 3 Talbot Fair Plays, the 3 Elkton Eclipse, the 2 Bohemia Eurekas, and the 5 Diamond States for showing the crowd how to play the game!

MARYLAND CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES TOURNEY SET

Elkton clinched the number 1 seed on Sunday as they defeated the Dauntless of Havre de Grace 24-14 as the skys opened up at the Stepping Stone Museum washing out the second match.  Also affected by the weather was the second game of the Chesapeake-Bohemia game.  Bohemia won the first game 29-7 before heavy rains washed out the finale.

Next Sunday at Jerusalem Mill, the 4th Annual Maryland State Championship Tournament will kick off at 10am with a record 6 clubs in attendance.  At 10am, the Talbot Fair Plays will play the Arundel Excelsiors while the Havre de Grace Dauntless take on the Chesapeake Nine.  The Winner of the Havre de Grace/Chesapeake game will play Elkton while the Talbot/Arundel victor will play Potomac at Noon.  The championship will take place at 4:05pm.

BROOKLYN WINS TWO OVER OYSTER POND

Atlantic made its annual excursion to picturesque Poquatuck Park in Orient to face the Oyster Pond Eagles. In the first contest, Atlantic struck first, and struck mightily, with 6 runs in its first inning, then adding 7 more runs in the 4th inning to coast to an 18-6 victory. Toothpick led Atlantic with 4 hits, including a double, and scored 3 aces. TC, Dreambucket, and Wildhorse each had 2 hits for Atlantic. Tree picked up the victory.

In the second contest, Atlantic scored once in its first, but the Eagles answered right back, scoring 3 times in their first to take a lead they would hold until the 4th inning, when the Atlantic offense took over while its defense held the Eagles to only one more run. The result was a 16-4 triumph for the Atlantic. Wildhorse and Willy Mo led Atlantic with 2 hits apiece. Wildhorse successfully pitched his first game of the season for Atlantic, gaining the complete game victory.

Interested In Playing? Event Scheduled this Weekend

If you are interested in playing vintage base ball this weekend, this weekend is a perfect time to come out and learn about the sport and sign up.  If you live in southern Delaware, you are really in luck.  A new club is forming in Sussex County, Delaware in Lewes/ Cape Henelopen.  On Saturday at 1pm, there will be an exhibition match as well as a question/answer and hands on session with players from all over the southern half of the Mid Atlantic League. Here is an exerpt from the Cape Gazette about this weekend’s activities:

America’s pastime. The old ballgame. The crack of the bat. As the season is winding down, thoughts are turning to the playoffs and the great October tradition of the World Series.

As recently as the middle of the 20th century, though, teams from Lewes, Milton and Rehoboth Beach competed against each other in what was known as the Peninsula League or the Eastern Shore League, playing for community pride.

The Lewes, Milton and Rehoboth Beach historical societies invite the public to enjoy a game of vintage baseball using 1864-era rules at 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 21, at the Virden Center, 700 Pilottown Road, Lewes.

Vintage ballists from the Diamond State Base Ball Club (BBC); Eclipse BBC of Elkton, Md.; Chesapeake BBC of Baltimore, Md.; and, hopefully, the Fair Play BBC of Easton, Md. will participate. The players will be in their team uniforms.

This is beyond a spectator event as the historical societies invite the public to participate in the game.

There is no charge to watch the game and refreshments will be served.

Interest will be judged as to the possible formation of a Cape Henlopen Base Ball Club that may participate in a vintage league in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Anyone interested in participating as a player Aug. 21, should contact The Lewes Historical Society at 302-645-7670 or info@historiclewes.org.

According to vbba.org, “Vintage Base Ball is base ball (yes, it was spelled two words prior to the 1880s) played by the rules and customs of the 19th Century. Our players (sometimes called ballists) wear period reproduction uniforms, either with long trouser and shield shirt, or a later style lace shirt and knickers. They recreate the game based on rules and research of the various decades of the mid-to-late nineteenth century. The playing of vintage base ball can be seen at open-air museums, tournament re-enactments and city parks.

“It is played on both open grass fields and modern baseball diamonds.

“Spectators may consider vintage base ball to be a new sport, however, some clubs have been in existence since the 1980s. Vintage base ball is a reflection of how baseball existed at an earlier time.”

Nancy Alexander, director of the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society, said, “The three museums have been collaborating recently and have been trying to find a fun program that would involve all three organizations and communities. Baseball seemed like a great start.”
“There is a certain level of friendly competition between the communities that we thought would be fun to play on,” Milton Historical Society Director Melinda Huff said.

To date, the earliest reference found to baseball in the Cape Region is Feb. 20, 1874, when a game between Milton and Lewes was to take place.

Other references have been found including an 1874 game between Georgetown’s Central Base Ball Club and a team picked from Lewes and Milton. Played on Lewes Beach, the game was a blowout with Central winning 27-8.

One of Lewes’s most infamous events unfolded around a disagreement about baseball. Ebe Lynch, Lewes’s postmaster, was manager of the town team when a controversy ensued concerning a Lewes boy being left off the roster.

The boy’s uncle was enraged at the prospect of his nephew being left off the team and tracked Lynch down on Second Street, shooting him dead around 11 o’clock at night.

The event was so sensational that the story occupied the entire front page of Lewes’s Delaware Pilot newspaper.

The team was left in such disarray that it had to leave its semi-pro league, with Milford taking its place for the 1918 season.

Noted Lewes historian Hazel Brittingham discussed the story in greater detail on a previous Lewes Historical Society podcast, which can be listened to at historiclewes.org under Visit – Podcasts. Even small hamlets, such as Nassau, fielded teams occasionally.

To contact the Lewes Historical Society, call 302-645-7670; call the Milton Historical Society at 684-1010 or the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society at 227-7310 or email info@historiclewes.org or info@historicmilton.org.

If you can’t make it to this event and are interested in playing or starting your own club, please contact us at elktonbase_ball@yahoo.com or info@mavbbl.com and we’ll get back to you right away.  We are especially looking for players interested in starting a club in Chester County, PA; Lancaster/York, PA; Sussex County, DE; and Fredericksburg and Williamsburg, VA.

Game Played on Historic Grounds

ELKTON DOWNS PHILADELPHIA AT HISTORIC GROUNDS

Elkton 14 Philadelphia 3

The Eclipse Base Ball Club played at its historic grounds formerly known as the Elkton Fair Grounds for the first time since 1891.  The old Elkton Fair Grounds stretched from what is present day Railroad Avenue all the way up to Elkton Boulevard.  One of the most popular horse racing tracks of the late 19th and early 20th century stood on one corner of the grounds, and a 5,000 seat base ball park sat in the other corner.  The Elkton Fair Company ran the grounds and had a fair each year on the grounds that ran all Summer long.  A long exposition hall and stables ran between the two sporting sites.  In 1891, the railroad decided that the tracks needed to be in a straighter line, virtually cutting the grounds in two.  Today, all that is left of open space is ground owned by the Immaculate Conception Church.  On Sunday, August 15th the Eclipse returned to its old “stomping’ grounds if just for one day to entertain the Athletic BBC of Philadelphia.  In 1867 such clubs as the Bachelor Club of Philadelphia and the Enterprise BBC of Baltimore played on the site.  Today, its just a pastorial ground, where an occasional soccer game or t-ball game now takes place.  The Amtrak trains run by every 15 minutes and Elkton is no longer a stop on the railroad, though the old train station is still there.  Today, the Eclipse jumped out to an early 4 run lead after the first inning and then tacked on 2 more in the second before Philadelphia scored in the 3rd to make it 6-1.  The experienced Elkton club was just too much for the Athletic on a rainy day full of downpours.  The Eclipse eventually pulled away 11-1, before the Athletic added another and then the Eclipse finshed their scoring in the 7th.  The Athletic managed one more in the 9th, but it was too little as the Eclipse won 14-3.

Brooklyn 10 Huntington 3

Atlantic enjoyed a rare all-Long Island weekend, playing at West Hills Day Camp in Huntington on Saturday at the invite of the Huntington Kiwanis Club, and playing on Sunday at Islip Grange in Sayville at the invite of the Islip Historical Society.  In Saturday’s game, Shakespeare led all Atlantics with 4 hits, including 2 doubles, and scored 3 aces in the 10-3 victory.  Wildhorse (triple), Flash (double), Butcher (double), Dreambucket, and Tuna each had 2 hits.  Tree threw 8 whitewashes, allowing a 3-run 8th inning as the only blemish on his victory.
Brooklyn 26 NY Mutuals 5
Brooklyn 11 NY Mutuals 5
On Sunday, Atlantic was back home on the Grange to once again square off against the Mutuals.  Atlantic took charge immediately, scoring 5 times in the first inning, and then a 9-run 4th inning sealed the Mutuals’ fate, as Atlantic went on to a 26-5 victory.  Shakespeare and Toothpick, each with 4 hits including a double and 3 aces, led the way for Atlantic.  Dreambucket (double, triple, 3 aces), Hawk (triple, 3 aces), Butcher (double, home run, 3 aces), and Hammy (double, ace) each had 3 hits.  Tree held the Mutual bats at bay to gain the victory.
The second match was much closer, but Atlantic again persisted, to come away with an 11-5 victory.  Dreambucket (3 aces) and Toothpick (double, ace) led Atlantic with 3 hits each.  Flash (double, 4 aces) and Hawk contributed 2 hits apiece.  Shakespeare entered the game in the 4th inning and shut down the Mutuals the rest of the way to pick up the victory.

Silver Ball Action; Maryland Clubs in Action

FLEMINGTON GETS TO FINAL OF SILVER BALL TOURNAMENT

Rochester, NY– The Flemington Neshanock had a surprise great run in the Silver Ball Tournament and got all the way to the Championship match before losing to the Cleveland Blues 20-4.  Along the way, the Neshanock knocked off a very good Kent Base Ball Club from Michigan 13-7,  downed the Flower City Club from Rochester 15-11; took care of business against the Woodstock Actives from Canada and then downed the Live Oak BBC of Rochester 17-6 to earn a birth in the finals.  The Silver Ball Tournament is considered one of the finest vintage base ball tournaments in the country and draws clubs from all over the United States and Canada.  Huzzah to the Neshanock for their great run!

CHESAPEAKE TAKES TWO FROM DIAMOND STATES

The Chesapeake Nine of Baltimore are riding a 3 game winning streak after they swept the Diamond State BBC of Delaware on Sunday.  In the first game, the Chessies won 17-13 and held on in the second game 7-4 to pick up two important wins in the Eastern Division rivalry match.

BROOKLYN TAKES 2 FROM PROVIDENCE; Ties 1

Brooklyn 9 Providence 6

Brooklyn 9 Providence 8

Brooklyn 8 Providence 8 (Tie)

Atlantic set sail for Providence, Rhode Island, for a weekend of games against long-time friend and rival, the Grays.  In two toughly fought contests, Atlantic squeaked by both times, taking the 1864 game 9-8 with 3 clutch aces in the 8th inning, and taking the 1884 game 9-6 with 4 clutch runs in the 7th.  In the first game, Flash led Atlantic with 3 hits, including a double and a monstrous home run that cleared the distant fence.  Shakespeare and Toothpick also had 3 hits each, with Pigtail picking up the victory.  In the second game, Atlantic managed just 9 hits, with Toothpick collecting 2 of them, but were able to put 4 of them together in the 7th inning to secure the victory.  Shakespeare held the Grays scoreless the final 4 innings in gaining the victory.

On Sunday, the Atlantics and Grays again faced off in an 1884 contest, but this time the setting was beautiful McCoy Stadium, home of the Pawtucket Red Sox.  Playing against a time limit, the game went into the 6th inning before we were forced to vacate the field for the other game.  Fittingly, the score stood at 8-8, and both teams came off the field with a feeling of accomplishment.  Shakespeare led Atlantic both with his bat and with his arm, hitting safely 3 times, and taming the Grays.  TC, Hammy, and Tuna each had 2 hits, while Hawk contributed a triple.

Big Matches this Weekend–Interested In Playing?

August 1—

A large slate of games took place this weekend with some big implications as we wind down the season.  At the end of this month is the first post season tournament.  The Maryland State Championship will take place August 29 at Jersuselum Mill in Falston, Maryland (home of the Chesapeake Nine).  On October 3rd the MAVBBL championship tournament will take place featuring the top 6 clubs in the league.  Stay tuned for more details.

Have you been looking at this site and wish  you could play?  If there’s not a club within an hours drive of you, then we are looking at adding a club in your region.  Soon we’ll be making a big push to recruit players for 4 prime areas:  Sussex County in Southern Delaware near Lewes; southern New Jersey in Salem County; Gettysburg, PA; and the York/Lancaster, PA area.  If you are interested in playing for one of these new clubs (or any of the existing ones) just email us at admin@mavbbl.com and we’ll get back to you with the details!

Mechanicsburg 14  Bohemia 10

Bohemia 11 Mechanicsburg 8

The two newest teams in the league got together for 2 fine games of 19th century base ball at Mechanicsburg’s new fine field.  Both of these clubs will be very strong in 2011 and should not be taken lightly by any opposing club.  In the first match Mechanicsburg held off the Eurekas by a score of 14-10. In the return game, the Bohemias outlasted the home Nine 11-8.

Talbot 9 Arudel 4

Talbot 13 Arundel 6

Old Bethpage Restoration Village Festival

Westfield Wheelmen 7 Brooklyn 5

Brooklyn 22 Coltsville Armory 2

Brooklyn 22 New York Mutuals 4

Atlantic made the short trip to OBVR to participate in this year’s tournament. Its opponents this day would be the Westfield Wheelmen and the Coltsville Armory. In the first game, Dreambucket homered in the 1st inning for an Atlantic lead, then both teams showed off their defensive skills, with Atlantic leading 5-3 after 7 1/2 innings. The Wheelmen then put together a 4-run 8th inning to jump ahead and held Atlantic in the 9th to claim a 7-5 victory. Dreambucket went 4 for 4 and Tuna went 3 for 3 to lead Atlantic.

In the second game, Atlantic took out its frustration on Coltsville, pounding them for a 22-2 victory. TC and Shakespeare had 4 hits apiece, TC with 2 doubles, a triple, and 4 aces, and Shakespeare with 3 doubles and 3 aces. Dreambucket (double, home run), Toothpick (double, triple), and Nice&Easy (2 aces) contributed 3 hits each. Pigtail pitched to pick up the victory.

Atlantic faced Mutual on Sunday and put out another 22-run effort, while giving up just 4 runs. Toothpick led off the game with a home run, finishing with 4 hits for the game. Dreambucket also had 4 hits, while Shakespeare, Flash, and TC had 3 hits each. Hammy picked up the victory.

Hartford Colt 45’s 12 New York Gothams 10

The Gotham Base Ball Club of New York traveled the well-worn routes of Long Island on their annual pilgrimage to pay tribute to the team’s birth place, Old Bethpage Restoration Village.  Unfortunately they disrespected us by not letting us win all four games.

In the Gotham BBC’s first match of the tournament and its first match ever against the Hartford Colt 45s, the team exhibited some fine base ball.  In the top of the 1st frame Collector started off with a 4 base hit, Huzzah!  In the bottom of the 1st frame the Colt 45s scored 1.  The Gotham BBC scored no aces in the top of the 2nd frame and the Colt 45s scored 3.  In the top of the 3rd frame the Gotham BBC scored 3 aces. Collector hit a 2 base hit, stole 3rd and came home on Dutch’s 1 base hit.  Dutch stole 2nd and 3rd and came home on Wickets’ 1 base hit.  Wickets eventually scored on hands by Bambi and Weed.  In the bottom of the 3rd frame the Colt 45s scored 2 aces.  In the top of the 4th frame, the Gotham BBC scored 3 more aces.  Iron hit a one base hit, stole 2nd base and came home on Daffy’s 1 base hit.  Daffy scored on Collector’s one base hit.  Collector stole 2nd and 3rd and came home on hands.  The next two frames the score remained tied at 7.  In the top of the 7th frame, the Gotham BBC scored 1 ace.  Collector hit a two base hit and scored on Dutch’s 1 base hit.  Unfortunately, the Colt 45s scored 5 aces in their half of the 7th frame.  In the top of the 9th the Gotham BBC held a rally and scored 2 more aces but it fell short of the victory.  Daffy hit a two base hit, stole 3rd base and came home on Collector’s 3  base hit.  He eventually scored on hands.  The game ended with the score Gotham BBC 10 Colt 45s 12.

Waterbury 17 New York Gothams 3

The Gotham BBC’s next game versus the Waterbury Connors did not fair so well.  We struggled to have a team, at the plate and in the field.  Through the first 4 frames the Gotham BBC had one hit and poor Pops (Muffin from the fine city of Philadelphia) over ran 1st base and was tagged out.  Meanwhile Waterbury scored 11 aces.  In top half of the 6th frame Dirt hit a one base hit, stole 2nd and 3rd and scored on Charlie’s one base hit.  In the top 7th frame, Collector scored on a one base hit, a steal of 2nd and 3rd and a easy stroll home on Phillie’s (Another muffin from Philadelphia) 2 base hit.  Unfortunately Waterbury scored 6 aces in their half of the 7th.  In the 8th frame, the Gotham BBC scored 1 more ace.  Dirt (Mutuals) hit a 1 base hit, stole 2nd base, came home on Charlie’s (Providence Grays) two base hit.  We held the Connors to 0 aces the rest of the game.  The finally tally was Gotham BBC 3 Waterbury Connors 17.

NY Gothams 19 Manetto Hill 18

Another day another base ball game and improved base ball club (thanks to some ringers). The Gotham BBC began the match in the field and allowed the SURPRISE to score 2 aces.  In the bottom of the 1st frame, the Gotham BBC score one ace.  Wickets hit a one base hit, stole 2nd and 3rd and came home on hands.  In the 2nd frame the SURPRISE scored 1 ace and the Gotham BBC scored 4.  Willy Mo (Atlantic BBC) hit a one base hit, stole 2nd and 3rd and came home on Flash’s one base hit.  Flash stole 2nd and 3rd and came home on Lad’s (SURPRISE) one base  hit.  Lad stole 2nd and 3rd and came home on Dean’s (Atlantic BBC) one base hit.  Dean stole 2nd and 3rd and came home on hands.  The SURPRISE scored 3 aces in the 3rd frame.  The Gotham BBC scored 3 aces in the 5th frame.  Flash hit a one base hit, stole 2nd and 3rd and came home on Lad’s one base hit.  Lad stole 2nd and 3rd and came home on Nick in Time’s 2 base hit.  Nick in Time came home on hands.  The SURPRISE scored 5 aces in their half of the 6th frame.  The Gotham BBC responded with 2 aces of their own.  Wickets started it off with his 2nd 2 base hit, steal of 3rd base and stroll home on Weed’s one base hit.  Weed stole 2nd and 3rd and strolled home on Hawk’s (Atlantic BBC) 2 base hit.  In the 8th frame the SURPRISE scored 6 aces on some annoying fielding.  The Gotham BBC scored 3 aces in their half.  Nick in Time hit a one base hit, stole 2nd and 3rd and came home on Dean’s 2 base hit.  Dean came home on Match’s 2 base hit.  Match came home on hands.  With the Gotham BBC club down 12-18, the two teams entered the bottom of the 9th frame.  With well placed hitting and SURPRISE poor fielding the Gotham BBC put the SURPRISE on the SURPRISE.  Weed started the frame off with a base on balls.  He promptly stole 2nd and advanced on Dutch’s one base hit.  Dutch stole 2nd base and both of them came home on Hawk’s two base hit.  Hawk came home on Willy Mo’s one base hit.  Willy Mo stole 2nd base and came home on Tony’s one base hit.  Tony stole 2nd base.  Tony advanced to 3rd on Flash’s base on balls.  Both of them came home on Lad’s one base hit.  Lad stole 2nd base and came home on Nick in Time’s one base hit.  The Gotham BBC wins the match with no hands.  Final score Gotham BBC 19 Manetto Hill SURPRISE 18 Providence Grays 7 New York Gothams 6

After an invigorating win the Gotham BBC played the Providence Grays.  In its history the Gotham BBC has never won a match against the Grays.  Well today will be different!  The Gotham BBC played two frames without scoring an ace.  The Grays scored two in the bottom half of the 1st and none in the 2nd.  The Gotham BBC scored two in the 3rd frame.  Wickets hit a 2 base hit, stole 3rd base, and came home on Hawks’ 1 base hit.  Hawk stole 2nd base and came home on outs.  Shoeless ended our threat with an out to a Tree!  Come on, they’re out there to avoid not hit into!  The Grays scored 4 aces in the next 2 innings.  The Gotham BBC was held off the boards for three innings.  In the top of the 7th frame, Gotham BBC scored one ace on Flash’s 1 base hit and Tony’s 2 base hit.  The Grays scored 1 ace in their half of the 7th frame.  The Gotham BBC scored two aces in the top of the 8th frame.  Hawk hit a one base hit, stole 2nd base and came home on Dean’s one base hit.  Dean stole 2nd base and came home on outs.  The Grays didn’t score a run in their half of the inning.  With the score Gotham BBC 5 and Providence Grays 7 the two teams entered the 9th inning.  Tony hit a one base hit.  Dutch grounded out.  Tony came home on Stacks’ one base hit.  Stacks stole 2nd base.  Wickets grounded out.  With two outs Hawk “Rally Starter” came to bat.  After a tense battle between pitcher and striker…Hawk flied out to Center Field.  Game over Gotham BBC 6 Providence Grays 7

Flemington Downs Philadelphia in Bartram’s Garden; Chessies Stun Eclipse

(Editor’s Note: Make sure you read this week’s historical story as it talks about the very first all-star game in 1858!)

The Athletic of Philadelphia hosted the Neshanock of Flemington in a new location for the Philadelphians.  The site of the match was the historic Bartrams Garden in West Philadelphia.  (http://www.bartramsgarden.org/).  A good crowd was on hand to see this curious “new” sport to Philadelphia including several news cameras (yes foreign to the 19th century ballist, but is well known to the 21st century player).  While the air was hot for this match, the Neshanock’s bats were even hotter as they lead after just 3 innings 10-0.  The Neshanock slowly built on their lead each inning and finally when the match was over and the players could head for shade the scoreboard read 22-3 in favor of the Neshanock.  The Athletic playing in just their 8th match have the eventual look of a real contender as they gain experience in 19th century base ball, but on this day, the Neshanock’s experience, bats and fielding were just too much for the new Athletic.

Brooklyn 6 Newtown Sandy Hooks 5 (10 innings)

Brooklyn 11 Newtown 1

Atlantic journeyed north once more, to picturesque McLaughlin Vineyards in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, to face the Newtown Sandy Hooks.  The first contest saw Atlantic scoring early to take a 5-0 lead, but Sandy Hook fought back late, scoring twice in the top of the 9th to tie at 5-5.  Atlantic pushed a run across in the bottom of the 10th on hits by Shakespeare and Dreambucket to capture the 6-5 victory.  Dreambucket, Toothpick, and Pigtail each had 2 hits, with Pigtail pitching the victory.  In the second contest, Atlantic again struck early, with 2 runs in the 1st inning, then 6 runs in the 4th and 3 more in the 6th to triumph 11-1.  Shakespeare and Flash led Atlantic with 3 hits each, and Dreambucket, Toothpick, and Wildhorse had 2 hits apiece.  Hammy went the distance to pick up the win.
Elkton 20 Chesapeake 5
Chesapeake 11 Elkton 9
The home nine from Elkton rolled in the first game 20-5 and expected more of the same for the second match of the day.  The Eclipse however are still getting used to their new field for 2010 with a short right field.  The Chessies snuck up on the Elkton club in the second match scoring early and often to jump out to a large lead.  An agreed upon 7 inning affair was not enough time for the Eclipse to make a comeback and the Baltimore club walked away with their first win ever against Elkton.  Congratulations to Chesapeake on their big win not only in the MAVBBL Eastern Division, but also in the Maryland State Championship Series.

Fleischmanns, New York

While taking the iron carriage up to Fleischmanns, Wickets and Stacks made a astute observation – Another reason to hate the Yankees – Bronx Traffic.

The day began inauspiciously due to the afore mentioned hated Yankees when Wickets and Stacks arrived 10 minutes late.  After quick preparation our 1902 match began.  In the top of the frame the Gotham Club got two hits and no runs.  In the bottom of the half, Monk pitched a decently but allowed 4 runs.  In the top of the 2nd frame, the Gotham Club’s only base runner was a Rugs’ walk.  In the bottom of the 2nd frame, MAC scored 4 runs.  In the top of 3rd frame, Monk singled, stole 2nd base and came home on Crash’s single.  The Gotham Club scored no more that frame.  In the bottom of the 3rd frame, the Gotham Club did not allow a run.  The Gotham Club did not score another run the rest of the game.  MAC scored 10 in the of the 6th frame.  The game finally ended with the score Gotham 3 MAC 23.

The second game of the day was played with good ol’ 1864 rules and the Gotham BBC of NY played a more competitive game (note: we’re all winners in competitive games (say losers)).  The Gotham BBC lost the bat toss and we batted around first.  Monk started off the game hitting a 1 base hit, stealing 2nd and running home on the next three outs.  For the first time today the Gotham Club had a lead.  Unfortunately, it was relinquished in the bottom of the frame when MAC scored 2.  In the top of the 2nd frame Rugs scored on a 1 base hit, a steal of 2nd base and a 2 base hit by Stacks.  Both teams were held off the scoreboard by some magnificent pitching by Stacks (and maybe by some good defense by his “teammates).  In the bottom of the 5th frame MAC scored 2 runs.  In the 6th frame, the minimum 6 pitches were thrown by both sides demonstrating Stacks amazing ability to pitch better than any Gotham ever (excepting many other Gotham who’ve pitched).  In the the top of the 8th frame with the score Gotham 3 MAC 6, the Gotham Club scored 1 with a 1 base hit by Stacks, a steal of 2nd base and a 1 base hit by Cannon.  Unfortunately, in the bottom of that inning MAC saw through Stacks’ t-ball like pitches and scored 7 aces.  In the top of the 9th frame, Wickets hit a 1 base hit, stole 2nd base and came home on Bugs’ one base hit.  That was the only ace scored that inning.  The final tally was Gotham 4 MAC 13.  Except for one inning the Gotham Club played a very good game.

The awards for the 1st game: Offensive – Monk, Defensive – Crash

The awards for the 2nd game: Offensive – Stacks, Defensive – Monk and Cannon (tie)

On the 27 hour carriage ride back to our fair city, Wickets and Stacks made another astute observation.  After sitting in 5 miles of traffic in the County of the Bronx and observing for the 2nd time in the day that the Yankees suck because of Bronx traffic, we crossed the Long Island Sound and observed that the Mets are the better NYC team because Queens’ traffic was nonexistent.

Talbot Wins Gettysburg Tourney; Elizabeth Shocks Brooklyn

The first Annual Gettysburg 19th Century Base Ball Tournament was a huge success as 4 clubs from the MAVBBL joined the Pittsburgh Franklins and the Somerset Frosty Sons of Thunder for a weekend of great vintage base ball.  Hundreds were on hand for all 12 matches that took place just minutes from the battlefield in Gettysburg, PA.  Congratulations to the Talbot Fair Plays who won the inagural event over the Elkton Eclipse 14-9.  Somerset downed Pittsburgh for 3rd place 10-7.  For all kinds of information on the tournament go to www.gvbbt.wordpress.com

Both Talbot and Elkton ran the table in their round robin matches by going a perfect 3-0 each recording victories over Flemington, Somerset and Pittsburgh to reach the championship round.  In the final, Talbot struck first with 4 aces in the top of the first.  Elkton came back with 3 talleys in the bottom frame but then Talbot slowly pulled away each inning and came away with a convincing 14-9 win.  Talbot had timely and effective hitting and the Eclipse couldn’t get them to drop when needed and the Fair Plays won a good defensive game in the brutal heat.

If your club is interested in playing in the 2011 Tournament, please contact elktonbase_ball@yahoo.com to get information and an application.  There will be a few select openings for next year’s event.

Atlantic crossed the great river to journey to Roselle Park in New Jersey, to face the recently re-formed Elizabeth Resolutes.  On this hot day, Atlantic started hot, scoring in each of the first 6 innings to rout the Resolutes, 29-5.  Flash had a double and triple among his 5 hits, along with 4 aces, to lead Atlantic.  TC (triple, 5 aces), Shakespeare (double, 3 aces), Dreambucket (triple, 5 aces), and Willy Mo each had 4 hits.  Wildhorse added a double and triple as Tree held down Resolute to pick up his 6th victory without a loss.  The heat seemed to take its toll in the second game, as Atlantic mustered only 6 hits for 6 runs through the first 8 innings, holding a 6-4 lead.  Atlantic then scored an insurance run in the top of the 9th, needing to hold off Resolute in their 9th for the win, but Resolute fought back, scoring 3 times to tie the score, then completing the comeback by scoring again to claim an 8-7 thriller.  Seven different Atlantics had a hit each, but Atlantic couldn’t sustain its offense, as Resolute played much better defense this second game.

Talbot 9 Bohemia 8
Talbot 14 Bohemia 10
Easton, MD–On Saturday July 3 Talbot hosted new division rival Bohemia for two well-played matches. In the first match Bohemia jumped out to an early lead. After several scoreless innings Talbot was able to put some runs on the board and eventually knot the game up at 5. Talbot then manufactured 4 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning and withstood Bohemia’s effort in the top of the 9th, making the final out on the potential tying run at the plate on a daring steal attempt to hold on for a 9-8 victory. In the second match Talbot pulled out in front early before Bohemia was able to pull ahead. After several lead changes the score was tied at 10 going into the 9th inning. Talbot then scored 4 in the top of the 9th to come away with another win, 14-10.

Elkton 29 Flemington 9

Cape May, NJ– The Eclipse BBC of Elkton traveled by Ferry and by stage coach to visit the Flemington Neshanock at Historic Cold Spring Village just outside of Cape May on Saturday for the Independence Day Celebration in Cape May.  Elkton started the fireworks early though and used its power to blast many bombs in to the air at the intimate Cold Spring Village Park.  The Eclipse started early and built its lead each inning batting around often against the Neshanock.  Historic Cold Spring Village is a rebuilt 19th century working village that was built by salvaging 18th and 19th century buildings from Cape May and Cumberland Counties.  Elkton and Flemington will duel it out in a rematch during both of their next matches which will take place Saturday, July 17th in Gettsyburg, PA.

MAVBBL Action Heats Up

It was a hot one along the east coast this past weekend yet several matches took place involving MAVBBL clubs.

The biggest match of the day involving two MAVBBL clubs was the Eclipse from Elkton traveling down to Rockville to take on the much improved Potomac Nine from Washington DC.  It was an unusual start time of 11am to accomodate the Eclipse who would later be playing in Glen Burnie to challenge the Excelsiors from Arundel at 3pm.    In the first match, the Potomacs who find themselves in the top half of the league standings played a valiant match against the Eclipse showing their veteran skills.  In the end though, the Eclipse held on for an 11-8 victory.  Both clubs are among the oldest teams in the MAVBBL having started playing in 2006 and the skill level showed on this day.

The Eclipse next traveled to Arundel later in the day.  Under brutal heat, the Elkton Nine won its second match of the day 9-2 over the upstart Excelsiors.

The biggest match of the day though involved the first place Brooklyn Atlantics traveling to Waterbury Connectictut to challenge the Connors in a two game match.  The Connors who handed Elkton its only loss of the season to date is generally considered one of the finest if not finest club in New England.  Atlantic took its perfect 20-0 record north to Waterbury to face the always tough Connors.  Atlantic held a lead in both games, but lost two heartbreakers by one run each, both times having the tying run on base in the 9th inning.  Atlantic played well, but Waterbury played better this day and earned the 4-3 and 5-4 victories.  Dreambucket had 2 hits in the first game, and TC had 2 hits in the second game, including a double.  They both scored 2 aces for Atlantic

In Eastern Division play, two rivals hooked up on the hot day in Maryland to play 2 games.  The Chesapeake Nine from Baltimore hosted the Dauntless from Havre de Grace.  In games that had not only divisional implications, but also would affect the Maryland State Championship series standings, there was a lot on the line for both clubs.  In two evenly matched games, the two clubs split 21-19 and 11-9 to each walk away with a victory.

Hoboken, NJ– On Saturday, June 19, the Elizabeth Resolutes and the Flemington Neshanock marked the 164 anniversary of the first officially recorded base ball game.  The first recorded game was at the Elysian Fields on June 19, 1846 under rules set up by Alexander Cartwright.  On Saturday, the Resolutes and the Neshanock comemerated that day with a match of their own at Stevens Institute of Technology.  After Flemington went up 1-0 in the top of the 1st inning, Elizabeth came back with 9 unanswered runs over the next 3 frames and cruised to a 19-5 win.  It wasn’t all about wins and loses on this day though.  Hoboken mayor Dawn Zimmer saw her dream come true of a vintage base ball game taking place in her town.  “I think of Hoboken as the birthplace of baseball,” she said. “It should be played here. I want to work with Vintage Baseball Association and the Hoboken Museum to bring a team here.”

Elkton 17 Delaware 14

On a hot day in Cecil County, The Eclipse hosted the Diamond States, their opponent for the second consecutive week.  The much improved Delaware Nine gave the defending MAVBBL champs all they could handle but in the end the Elkton club hung on for their 11th win in 12 tries.
