Talbot Wins Gettysburg Tourney; Elizabeth Shocks Brooklyn

The first Annual Gettysburg 19th Century Base Ball Tournament was a huge success as 4 clubs from the MAVBBL joined the Pittsburgh Franklins and the Somerset Frosty Sons of Thunder for a weekend of great vintage base ball.  Hundreds were on hand for all 12 matches that took place just minutes from the battlefield in Gettysburg, PA.  Congratulations to the Talbot Fair Plays who won the inagural event over the Elkton Eclipse 14-9.  Somerset downed Pittsburgh for 3rd place 10-7.  For all kinds of information on the tournament go to www.gvbbt.wordpress.com

Both Talbot and Elkton ran the table in their round robin matches by going a perfect 3-0 each recording victories over Flemington, Somerset and Pittsburgh to reach the championship round.  In the final, Talbot struck first with 4 aces in the top of the first.  Elkton came back with 3 talleys in the bottom frame but then Talbot slowly pulled away each inning and came away with a convincing 14-9 win.  Talbot had timely and effective hitting and the Eclipse couldn’t get them to drop when needed and the Fair Plays won a good defensive game in the brutal heat.

Atlantic crossed the great river to journey to Roselle Park in New Jersey, to face the recently re-formed Elizabeth Resolutes.  On this hot day, Atlantic started hot, scoring in each of the first 6 innings to rout the Resolutes, 29-5.  Flash had a double and triple among his 5 hits, along with 4 aces, to lead Atlantic.  TC (triple, 5 aces), Shakespeare (double, 3 aces), Dreambucket (triple, 5 aces), and Willy Mo each had 4 hits.  Wildhorse added a double and triple as Tree held down Resolute to pick up his 6th victory without a loss.  The heat seemed to take its toll in the second game, as Atlantic mustered only 6 hits for 6 runs through the first 8 innings, holding a 6-4 lead.  Atlantic then scored an insurance run in the top of the 9th, needing to hold off Resolute in their 9th for the win, but Resolute fought back, scoring 3 times to tie the score, then completing the comeback by scoring again to claim an 8-7 thriller.  Seven different Atlantics had a hit each, but Atlantic couldn’t sustain its offense, as Resolute played much better defense this second game.
