Big Matches this Weekend–Interested In Playing?

August 1—

A large slate of games took place this weekend with some big implications as we wind down the season.  At the end of this month is the first post season tournament.  The Maryland State Championship will take place August 29 at Jersuselum Mill in Falston, Maryland (home of the Chesapeake Nine).  On October 3rd the MAVBBL championship tournament will take place featuring the top 6 clubs in the league.  Stay tuned for more details.

Have you been looking at this site and wish  you could play?  If there’s not a club within an hours drive of you, then we are looking at adding a club in your region.  Soon we’ll be making a big push to recruit players for 4 prime areas:  Sussex County in Southern Delaware near Lewes; southern New Jersey in Salem County; Gettysburg, PA; and the York/Lancaster, PA area.  If you are interested in playing for one of these new clubs (or any of the existing ones) just email us at admin@mavbbl.com and we’ll get back to you with the details!

Mechanicsburg 14  Bohemia 10

Bohemia 11 Mechanicsburg 8

The two newest teams in the league got together for 2 fine games of 19th century base ball at Mechanicsburg’s new fine field.  Both of these clubs will be very strong in 2011 and should not be taken lightly by any opposing club.  In the first match Mechanicsburg held off the Eurekas by a score of 14-10. In the return game, the Bohemias outlasted the home Nine 11-8.

Atlantic made the short trip to OBVR to participate in this year’s tournament. Its opponents this day would be the Westfield Wheelmen and the Coltsville Armory. In the first game, Dreambucket homered in the 1st inning for an Atlantic lead, then both teams showed off their defensive skills, with Atlantic leading 5-3 after 7 1/2 innings. The Wheelmen then put together a 4-run 8th inning to jump ahead and held Atlantic in the 9th to claim a 7-5 victory. Dreambucket went 4 for 4 and Tuna went 3 for 3 to lead Atlantic.

In the second game, Atlantic took out its frustration on Coltsville, pounding them for a 22-2 victory. TC and Shakespeare had 4 hits apiece, TC with 2 doubles, a triple, and 4 aces, and Shakespeare with 3 doubles and 3 aces. Dreambucket (double, home run), Toothpick (double, triple), and Nice&Easy (2 aces) contributed 3 hits each. Pigtail pitched to pick up the victory.

Atlantic faced Mutual on Sunday and put out another 22-run effort, while giving up just 4 runs. Toothpick led off the game with a home run, finishing with 4 hits for the game. Dreambucket also had 4 hits, while Shakespeare, Flash, and TC had 3 hits each. Hammy picked up the victory.

Hartford Colt 45’s 12 New York Gothams 10

The Gotham Base Ball Club of New York traveled the well-worn routes of Long Island on their annual pilgrimage to pay tribute to the team’s birth place, Old Bethpage Restoration Village.  Unfortunately they disrespected us by not letting us win all four games.

In the Gotham BBC’s first match of the tournament and its first match ever against the Hartford Colt 45s, the team exhibited some fine base ball.  In the top of the 1st frame Collector started off with a 4 base hit, Huzzah!  In the bottom of the 1st frame the Colt 45s scored 1.  The Gotham BBC scored no aces in the top of the 2nd frame and the Colt 45s scored 3.  In the top of the 3rd frame the Gotham BBC scored 3 aces. Collector hit a 2 base hit, stole 3rd and came home on Dutch’s 1 base hit.  Dutch stole 2nd and 3rd and came home on Wickets’ 1 base hit.  Wickets eventually scored on hands by Bambi and Weed.  In the bottom of the 3rd frame the Colt 45s scored 2 aces.  In the top of the 4th frame, the Gotham BBC scored 3 more aces.  Iron hit a one base hit, stole 2nd base and came home on Daffy’s 1 base hit.  Daffy scored on Collector’s one base hit.  Collector stole 2nd and 3rd and came home on hands.  The next two frames the score remained tied at 7.  In the top of the 7th frame, the Gotham BBC scored 1 ace.  Collector hit a two base hit and scored on Dutch’s 1 base hit.  Unfortunately, the Colt 45s scored 5 aces in their half of the 7th frame.  In the top of the 9th the Gotham BBC held a rally and scored 2 more aces but it fell short of the victory.  Daffy hit a two base hit, stole 3rd base and came home on Collector’s 3  base hit.  He eventually scored on hands.  The game ended with the score Gotham BBC 10 Colt 45s 12.

Waterbury 17 New York Gothams 3

The Gotham BBC’s next game versus the Waterbury Connors did not fair so well.  We struggled to have a team, at the plate and in the field.  Through the first 4 frames the Gotham BBC had one hit and poor Pops (Muffin from the fine city of Philadelphia) over ran 1st base and was tagged out.  Meanwhile Waterbury scored 11 aces.  In top half of the 6th frame Dirt hit a one base hit, stole 2nd and 3rd and scored on Charlie’s one base hit.  In the top 7th frame, Collector scored on a one base hit, a steal of 2nd and 3rd and a easy stroll home on Phillie’s (Another muffin from Philadelphia) 2 base hit.  Unfortunately Waterbury scored 6 aces in their half of the 7th.  In the 8th frame, the Gotham BBC scored 1 more ace.  Dirt (Mutuals) hit a 1 base hit, stole 2nd base, came home on Charlie’s (Providence Grays) two base hit.  We held the Connors to 0 aces the rest of the game.  The finally tally was Gotham BBC 3 Waterbury Connors 17.

NY Gothams 19 Manetto Hill 18

Another day another base ball game and improved base ball club (thanks to some ringers). The Gotham BBC began the match in the field and allowed the SURPRISE to score 2 aces.  In the bottom of the 1st frame, the Gotham BBC score one ace.  Wickets hit a one base hit, stole 2nd and 3rd and came home on hands.  In the 2nd frame the SURPRISE scored 1 ace and the Gotham BBC scored 4.  Willy Mo (Atlantic BBC) hit a one base hit, stole 2nd and 3rd and came home on Flash’s one base hit.  Flash stole 2nd and 3rd and came home on Lad’s (SURPRISE) one base  hit.  Lad stole 2nd and 3rd and came home on Dean’s (Atlantic BBC) one base hit.  Dean stole 2nd and 3rd and came home on hands.  The SURPRISE scored 3 aces in the 3rd frame.  The Gotham BBC scored 3 aces in the 5th frame.  Flash hit a one base hit, stole 2nd and 3rd and came home on Lad’s one base hit.  Lad stole 2nd and 3rd and came home on Nick in Time’s 2 base hit.  Nick in Time came home on hands.  The SURPRISE scored 5 aces in their half of the 6th frame.  The Gotham BBC responded with 2 aces of their own.  Wickets started it off with his 2nd 2 base hit, steal of 3rd base and stroll home on Weed’s one base hit.  Weed stole 2nd and 3rd and strolled home on Hawk’s (Atlantic BBC) 2 base hit.  In the 8th frame the SURPRISE scored 6 aces on some annoying fielding.  The Gotham BBC scored 3 aces in their half.  Nick in Time hit a one base hit, stole 2nd and 3rd and came home on Dean’s 2 base hit.  Dean came home on Match’s 2 base hit.  Match came home on hands.  With the Gotham BBC club down 12-18, the two teams entered the bottom of the 9th frame.  With well placed hitting and SURPRISE poor fielding the Gotham BBC put the SURPRISE on the SURPRISE.  Weed started the frame off with a base on balls.  He promptly stole 2nd and advanced on Dutch’s one base hit.  Dutch stole 2nd base and both of them came home on Hawk’s two base hit.  Hawk came home on Willy Mo’s one base hit.  Willy Mo stole 2nd base and came home on Tony’s one base hit.  Tony stole 2nd base.  Tony advanced to 3rd on Flash’s base on balls.  Both of them came home on Lad’s one base hit.  Lad stole 2nd base and came home on Nick in Time’s one base hit.  The Gotham BBC wins the match with no hands.  Final score Gotham BBC 19 Manetto Hill SURPRISE 18 Providence Grays 7 New York Gothams 6

After an invigorating win the Gotham BBC played the Providence Grays.  In its history the Gotham BBC has never won a match against the Grays.  Well today will be different!  The Gotham BBC played two frames without scoring an ace.  The Grays scored two in the bottom half of the 1st and none in the 2nd.  The Gotham BBC scored two in the 3rd frame.  Wickets hit a 2 base hit, stole 3rd base, and came home on Hawks’ 1 base hit.  Hawk stole 2nd base and came home on outs.  Shoeless ended our threat with an out to a Tree!  Come on, they’re out there to avoid not hit into!  The Grays scored 4 aces in the next 2 innings.  The Gotham BBC was held off the boards for three innings.  In the top of the 7th frame, Gotham BBC scored one ace on Flash’s 1 base hit and Tony’s 2 base hit.  The Grays scored 1 ace in their half of the 7th frame.  The Gotham BBC scored two aces in the top of the 8th frame.  Hawk hit a one base hit, stole 2nd base and came home on Dean’s one base hit.  Dean stole 2nd base and came home on outs.  The Grays didn’t score a run in their half of the inning.  With the score Gotham BBC 5 and Providence Grays 7 the two teams entered the 9th inning.  Tony hit a one base hit.  Dutch grounded out.  Tony came home on Stacks’ one base hit.  Stacks stole 2nd base.  Wickets grounded out.  With two outs Hawk “Rally Starter” came to bat.  After a tense battle between pitcher and striker…Hawk flied out to Center Field.  Game over Gotham BBC 6 Providence Grays 7
