2010 Championship Tournament

The 2010 MAVBBBL Championship Tournament will take place Sunday, October 3rd at Ft Mott State Park in Pennsville, NJ.  The six top clubs in the league will compete for the crown in a single elimination tournament over just one day.  As of September 21st, the seedings for the tournament are (tie for 1st- Elkton and Brooklyn), 3- Talbot 4-Elizabeth 5-Bohemia and 6-Potomac.  If the season ended today, at 10am Talbot would face Potomac and Elizabeth would be up against Bohemia.  At noon the semi finals would take place with Elkton and Brooklyn each playing the winners of the 10am matches.  At 2pm the losers of the first and second round games square off against each other.  At 4pm the consolation bracket for 3rd place takes place and then at 2:20, the Championship will comence.

Games count in the standings through September 30 to decide the seedings.  Bohemia is the only first year club to make it to this year’s tournament.  Next year they will be called the Cecil Club of Chesapeake City as they originate from the town split in half by the C&D canal and hale from Cecil County, Maryland.  Another club from Cecil County will be in this years tournament as the defending MAVBBL champions.  The Elkton Eclipse are coming off of the 4th straight Maryland State Title.  Speaking of titles, the Talbot Fair Plays from Easton, Maryland are the third seed this year.  The champions of the Gettysburg Tournament, the Fair Plays will be one of the favorites to win this year’s title.  The final club from the state of Maryland (and actually from Washington DC) is the Potomac Nine of Washington.  While they take the name of the Potomac’s, they play their games in Gaithersburg, MD.  This year they seperated from the Chesapeake Club of Baltimore and were their own independent team.  New York’s entry in this year’s tournament is the Brooklyn Atlantics who come in with a gaudy 40-5 record (as of September 20) and are the winners of several tournaments including the John Clarkson tournament in Cooperstown this past Spring.  The final entry is the “host” club as they are from New Jersey.  The Elizabeth Resolutes returned this year to the 1864 game and had a very successful campaign downing Brooklyn twice this year and are always a threat to make a deep tournament run.

Admission to the tournament is free and there is fun for the entire family.  Bring your own lawn chairs or blankets and a picnic basket. (Donations are always welcome).  When you come to the event, if you have any questions, please ask any of the players in between matches or even in between innings what is going on.  There will also be several players going through the crowd answering questions as well.  Browse through this website to get more information on how it is we play.  You will immediately notice it as baseball, but there are many quirks that make it a fun and unique game to not only play but to watch.
